PK. Mathematics and Numeracy

• PK. Number Sense and Operations
  • PK.39 Children demonstrate understanding of numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems.
    • PK.39.DG Use number words and concepts to explore and manipulate quantity, size, and relationships.
      • PK.39.1 Develops understanding of counting process (recognition and naming numerals one, two and three); counting up to ten from memory in home language (e.g., recites, “one, two, three”), without assistance.
      • PK.39.2 Counts up to ten objects; matching numbers one-to-one with objects (cubes, toys, and pennies) within daily activities.
      • PK.39.3 Develops understanding that when counting items they must be counted only once, and that none should be left out.
      • PK.39.4 Begins recognizing that the last number counted represents the “total objects” (for quantities up to ten). Counting is cumulative.
      • PK.39.5 Applies numbers and counting concepts within daily routines (count numbers of children at the table).
      • PK.39.6 Applies counting to new situations (counting objects, counting groups).
      • PK.39.7 Demonstrates understanding that numbers represent quantity (gets three apples out of the box).
      • PK.39.8 Uses math concepts (more, less, some, many, all, a few, none, huge, tiny, small, smaller, large, larger) to compare quantities.
      • PK.39.9 May count backwards from ten.
      • PK.39.10 Differentiates numerals from letters.
      • PK.39.11 Recognizes and names some numerals (pointing to written numerals named by adult).
      • PK.39.12 Writes and identifies some numerals named by adult.
      • PK.39.13 Uses meanings of numbers to create strategies for solving problems and responding to practical situations, with assistance (e.g., “Jimmy took two crackers and I didn’t get any.”).
• PK. Measurement
  • PK.40 Children demonstrate understanding of measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement (including size, volume, height, weight, length, area, and time).
    • PK.40.DG Use geometric modeling and spatial reasoning according to different dimensions.
      • PK.40.1 Engages in activities that explore and develop vocabulary for measurable properties such as length and weight, or capacity.
      • PK.40.2 Compares amongst several objects based on one or more attributes (length, size, weight) using words such as “shorter”, “bigger”, or “lighter”.
      • PK.40.3 Understands positional terms such as “between”, “inside”, “over”, “under”, and “behind”.
      • PK.40.4 Sorts and classifies objects based on one or more attributes.
      • PK.40.5 Orders objects by size, volume, height, weight, and length; with assistance.
      • PK.40.6 Measures objects using variable nonstandard units.
      • PK.40.7 Begins to measure objects using standard unit (one-inch cubes, paper clips).
      • PK.40.8 Uses measuring tools in play activities (measuring tape, measuring cups).
      • PK.40.9 Measures sand or water using a variety of containers.
      • PK.40.10 Uses picture cookbook to follow sequence and measures amounts for cooking projects, with assistance.
      • PK.40.11 Uses some vocabulary in relationship to measurement tools (scale, cup, ruler). May not have accurate understanding of meaning.
      • PK.40.12 Estimates size (e.g., “I’m as tall as the yellow bookshelf.”).
• PK. Properties of Ordering
  • PK.41 Children demonstrate understanding of patterns, relations, and functions used to organize their world and facilitate problem solving.
    • PK.41.DG Sort, classify, and order objects by color, number, size, or shape. Form simple patterns involving color, number, size, and shape.
      • PK.41.1 Compares shape and size of familiar objects.
      • PK.41.2 Sorts and builds with two- and three-dimensional shapes (sphere, cube, cone).
      • PK.41.3 Identifies and labels different kinds of two-dimensional shapes (square, circle, rectangle, triangle).
      • PK.41.4 Draws and creates pictures using various shapes.
      • PK.41.5 Recognizes non-geometrical shapes in nature (clouds or other things that are not circles, squares, triangles).
      • PK.41.6 Describes characteristics of familiar geometric and non-geometric shapes in the environment, with assistance.
      • PK.41.7 Puts together and takes apart shapes to make other shapes (use two triangles to make a rectangle with blocks).
      • PK.41.8 Makes and describes patterns including serialization based on numbers, shapes, and size.
      • PK.41.9 Predicts what comes next in a pattern and completes the pattern.
      • PK.41.10 Creates or extends a complex pattern with more than two repeating elements.
