If you love numbers and math, then you’re going to love learning about place value! It’s an important concept that helps us understand how to read and write numbers.
What is Place Value?
Place value is the value of a digit in a number, depending on its position. It’s all about understanding the place or position of a digit in a number and what that digit represents.
For example, let’s look at the number 456. The digit 4 is in the hundreds place, the digit 5 is in the tens place, and the digit 6 is in the ones place. Each place has a different value depending on its position.
Hundreds Place – The digit in the hundreds place represents how many hundreds there are in the number. In our example, the digit 4 in the hundreds place means there are four hundred.
Tens Place – The digit in the tens place represents how many tens there are in the number. In our example, the digit 5 in the tens place means there are five tens, which is the same as fifty.
Ones Place – The digit in the ones place represents how many ones there are in the number. In our example, the digit 6 in the ones place means there are six ones.
Reading and Writing Numbers with Place Value
Now that we know what place value is, we can use it to read and write numbers easily. Let’s use the number 642 as an example.
To read this number, we start with the digit in the hundreds place, which is 6. We know that 6 represents six hundred. Then we move to the tens place, which is 4. We know that 4 represents four tens, which is the same as forty. Finally, we look at the ones place, which is 2. We know that 2 represents two ones. So, the number 642 is six hundred forty-two.
To write this number, we start with the largest value, which is the digit in the hundreds place. We write 6 in the hundreds place, followed by 4 in the tens place, and 2 in the ones place. So, the number 642 is written as 642.
