Learning about community helpers—farmers, drivers, chefs, lunchroom helpers, etc.—is an important way for kids to learn about the world around them.
For example, lunch doesn’t magically appear in the cafeteria! Farmers grow produce. Drivers help move the produce from the farm to the store. Chefs purchase and prepare the food. Lunchroom helpers put the food on plates for kids to enjoy.
Understanding these processes that make up everyday life give us a sense of gratitude. They also help kids understand which adults are safe and around to help them. After learning about community helpers, kids may be inspired to be helpful to those around them. A school is a community, and a classroom is a community, and it’s important that the people there all take care of each other, just like we do in neighborhoods and in the world.
The free Khan Academy Kids app has a new set of books all about community helpers. With kid-friendly language and vibrant illustrations, these books are the perfect companion to a community helpers unit at school, or a great resource to prepare kids for upcoming outings—like their first trip to the dentist!
