Heads up – Teacher Appreciation Week 2022 is coming up May 2nd – 6th this year!
This year, we wanted to send a little reminder that one of the most meaningful gifts we can give our teacher is our appreciation. We want to recognize their impact and remind them that all their effort does not go unnoticed.
However, not all appreciation is equal. That’s why we want to encourage all of you who are ready to celebrate your teachers this Teacher Appreciation Week to go beyond a simple “thanks” and dial up the gratitude.
As Author Robert Cialdini says in his best selling book Influence, “It is not our statement of affection that impacts the recipient, it is our explanation of it.”
So, it’s not enough to just say thanks… We want to tell our teachers WHY we are grateful and thankful for all they do.
5 questions you can answer to share more effective appreciation with a teacher:
- What is my favorite thing about how (Teacher’s name) teaches?
- What is one of the most important things I’ve learned in class this year?
- What do I appreciate most about who (Teacher’s name) is as a person?
- What was one of my favorite memories from class this year?
- How am I a better person for knowing (Teacher’s name)?
The way you deliver your message is completely up to you. You can bring a simple letter to class, you can send an email, or keep it simple and share your words face to face in the classroom. You can do this for your present teachers, and even for past teachers to remind them of their impact!
The best gifts in life are free. Our presence is far more valuable than presents.
Take a few minutes next week to tell your teachers WHY you’re grateful for them. Encourage your kids to pull their teacher aside and share a few kind words face-to-face, heart-to-heart. Dedicate some time to write a letter or get specific in your gratitude.
Teachers are heroes and they rarely get to hear how much of an impact they have had on students, families and their colleagues. We don’t want them to only receive recognition when they retire – we want them to feel the love year-round.
Let’s change that! As William Arthur Ward once said, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”
