
New Khanmigo features help students visualize challenging concepts and give teachers more ways to create targeted practice
Khan Academy and Google.org are expanding their partnership to bring new AI-powered learning tools to students and teachers in time for Back to School 2026.
With support from a Google.org Fellowship and Google’s Gemini models, Khan Academy has developed new Khanmigo features that help students visually work through challenging math and science concepts and give teachers more control over creating targeted practice.
For district leaders, the goal is simple: give teachers and students tools that are useful, easy to adopt, and part of a proven learning platform.
“Google is a tremendous partner,” says Sal Khan, founder and CEO of Khan Academy. “The Google.org Fellows have supercharged our engineering effort, allowing us to produce several new AI-powered features in time for students and teachers to use these tools in the new school year.”
Khan Academy’s AI tutor, Khanmigo, has a new feature that helps generate interactive diagrams in math and science courses. Khanmigo can now detect the moment when a visual may help a student and, with Gemini, can generate an interactive diagram accordingly. The diagrams give students another way to visualize and explore challenging concepts, whereas before Khanmigo could only respond using text.
In addition, students can now interact with these diagrams, and Khanmigo will respond to what students are doing. For example, a student can now drag a line segment in a graph, and Khanmigo will react to where the student has placed the segment. This creates a more visual, responsive learning experience that’s designed to help students build a deeper understanding of challenging concepts. Early feedback is promising. Khan Academy is seeing preliminary signs of increased student engagement and improvement in next-item correctness, a measure of whether the student correctly answers the very next problem on the same skill during the same session without any help from Khanmigo.
Beyond student support, the Google.org Fellowship has focused on improving the teacher experience with Khanmigo. In the past, teachers could use Khanmigo to generate practice questions, but they didn’t have a way to curate what was sent to students.
Google engineers have now helped integrate Gemini models directly into Khan Academy’s Practice My Knowledge teacher tool, which enables teachers to generate high-quality, targeted multiple-choice questions in seconds. Teachers remain in control: they can review, refine, and curate AI-generated questions before assigning them to students.
Teachers can also assign scored or unscored practice and receive structured reporting, making it easier to understand where students are doing well and where they may need more support.
