Khan Academy’s new grade-level grammar courses give teachers free, standards-aligned practice for students in grades 5–10.
Strong writing starts with understanding how words, sentences, and paragraphs work. But finding grammar practice at the right level for every learner can take time. These ready-to-assign courses make it simple to choose targeted exercises, mixed practice, videos, articles, and skills that match what students need.
Each course includes targeted exercises, mixed practice, skill-building videos, articles that focus on common mistakes, and progress tracking. The courses are aligned to grade-level language standards in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
What teachers get in the grade-level grammar courses
Each course includes more than 60 targeted exercises that help students focus on individual grammar skills. Mixed-practice exercises give learners opportunities to bring several skills together and apply what they have learned.
Topics include:
- Parts of speech
- Subject-verb agreement
- Pronoun-antecedent agreement
- Fragments and run-on sentences
- Commonly confused words
- Sentence structure
- Consistent style and tone
Students can also use instructional videos and articles to review a concept before practicing it. Videos use fun examples and graphics to keep students engaged. Articles explain common errors in student-friendly language and can serve as reference materials throughout the year.
Grammar practice at the right level
The examples, passages, and questions in the grade-level grammar courses become more complex from one course to the next. This gives students a clear path for building their skills over time.
It also gives teachers more flexibility.
A ninth grader who needs to revisit sentence structure can work in the 7th and 8th grade courses. A sixth grader who is ready for more challenging practice can explore skills from the next level.
