Getting Started
More than 50 studies have shown Khan Academy content to have a positive impact on learning. We can’t wait to see what you and your students accomplish this summer!
- Choose the correct course(s) for your students: choose from your state standards aligned math or science courses,or Get Ready for Grade Level math courses.
- Create a course mastery goal for each student: Course mastery is a powerful classroom tool to differentiate and provide a guided learning path for students. Students can move through a year’s worth of content at their own pace. Teachers can also assign key skills for students to work on right now.
- Communicate goal and usage expectations to students – aim for at least 30 – 45 minutes and at least 1 skill a week! Research shows that 30 minutes a week on Khan Academy can lead to significant learning gains for students. Share the Student Tips for Completing Khan Academy handout from your Summer School Success Pack with your students. Our Growth Mindset content can help students see how effort and reflection leads to learning.
- Have students complete the course challenge: Course challenges cover a sampling of skills from the entire course. The data helps you and your students see what they already know and which areas need improvement.
- Use data reports to monitor student progress and drive instruction: Check out the activity report, skills report, course mastery progress report, or score report to see how your students are learning and growing!
- Celebrate success and achievements: We’ve got lots of tips below!

FAQ
Q: My learners are too young for Camp Khan, is there an alternative?
A: Absolutely! Camp Khan Kids is a free, self-paced virtual summer learning program for children ages 2–8. The camp guides parents and children in a playful educational journey using the Khan Academy Kids app as a launchpad into hands-on learning. Families will receive a weekly calendar of online and offline activities to spark imagination, play, and learning. It’s easy to use and adapt for your family; start at any time, choose any mix of activities that you like, and progress at your own pace. Activities cover reading, writing, math, logic, creative play, and social-emotional development. Weekly activity themes for 2024 will be revealed soon!
Camp Khan Kids takes place July 2024. For more information, visit the overview page.
Q: What are the “Get Ready” courses?
A: As we slide into summer, we know many families are concerned about keeping up with math skills, so we’re determined to do all we can to help students feel confident and comfortable next year! Our “Get Ready” courses help families focus on the critical skills students in grades 3-12 will need for the fall.
We designed the courses to help students master the most important skills they’ll need for the next grade. What’s more, students can use our new courses to figure out where they may have gaps before they enter that grade. Teachers and students can also use “Get Ready” at any time to complement grade-level instruction.
For more information about these courses, check out our blog post or watch Sal introduce “Get ready for 6th grade.”
Q: How can families participate?
